Applying for a Marriage License

  • Both parties applying for a marriage license must appear in person. 

  • Both parties must be eighteen years of age or older.  Individuals under eighteen must present a court order from a district or probate court.

  • There is a mandatory 3 day waiting period from the date of application before the marriage can be performed.  This waiting period can only be waived with a court order.

  • Once approved, the marriage license is valid for sixty days and can be used for a marriage performed in any city or town in Massachusetts.

  • Currently, the fee for issuance of a marriage license and completing the marriage intentions is $30.  This includes a certified copy of the marriage license which will be mailed to you.

Obtaining copies of a Marriage License

You can obtain certified copies of a marriage license by providing the date of the marriage, the names of the people married, a the $6 fee for each certified copy.  Please provide a self addressed stamped envelope if you would like us to mail the copies to you.

Justice of the Peace

Ashland's Town Clerk Tara M. Ward is a Justice of the Peace.  Please contact the office if you would like to make an appointment to get married.
