Virtual: Boston's Haymarket & The Market District with Historic New England

Monday, November 21, 2022

Join Historic New England's Ken Turino and Otto Gallotto, President of the Haymarket Pushcart Association, for a presentation on the past, present, and future of Boston’s Market District. From its earliest days, when peddlers with carts sold produce around the town, to today’s market, which includes halal butchers, artisanal cheese mongers, and Cambodian fruit sellers, Haymarket hosts an ever-changing and diverse population. Haymarket witnessed the Central Artery rise in the 1950s and retreat underground with the Big Dig in 2007. These obstacles have not stopped the market from serving a constant stream of students and tourists, longtime residents and newly arrived immigrant families, making it a vital and vibrant part of the city.

Led by Ken Turino, Manager of Community Partnerships and Resource Development at Historic New England. A faculty member of Tufts University’s Museum Studies Department, Ken teaches Reimagining Historic House Museums. Ken’s most recent publication is Reimagining the Historic House Museum: New Approaches and Proven Solutions, and he is currently working on a book on interpreting Christmas at historic houses and museums. Ken also serves as President of the House of Seven Gables Settlement Association.
