Town of Ashland Goes 100% Green for Community Aggregation Program

TOWN OF ASHLAND CHOOSES 100% GREEN ENERGY WITH COMMUNITY AGGREGATION PROGRAM

ASHLAND, MA – The Town of Ashland is pleased to announce that it has selected Public Power, LLC as the new supplier for its Community Choice Power Supply Program. And in a first for Ashland, all power purchased under the agreement will be considered “100% green” through National Wind.

In addition to transitioning to green energy, the program will also continue to provide significant savings for Ashland ratepayers. At $0.10947, Public Power’s 100% green rate is significantly less than the Eversource Basic Service rate of $0.11397. The rate, guaranteed for thirty months, ensures that residents do not need to worry about spiking energy costs based on seasonal and capacity changes.

“Locking into these long-term rates gives residents and businesses the opportunity for savings and price stability while assisting the town in transitioning from fossil fuel dependency”, stated Town Manager Michael Herbert. “We are happy we have the opportunity to extend our Community Choice program to the benefit of the town’s ratepayers and environment.”

The choice of the 100% Green option reaffirms the commitment of the Board of Selectmen and Town Manager to continue in the Town’s efforts of being a Smart, Safe, and Sustainable community. “With the contract that the Town Manager has put in place, residents of Ashland now have the opportunity to get 100 percent renewable electricity at a very competitive rate”, said Board of Selectman Chairman Rob Scherer. “This is a significant step in the fight against climate change”.

The Community Choice Aggregation program is administered through Colonial Power. In the past five years, the program has saved ratepayers over a $1 million in electricity costs through the bulk purchasing advantages of aggregation. This new contract is expected to save ratepayers $220,000 in the first year alone. With spikes occurring in the winter months, that savings is expected to increase.

Existing Eversource customers will be automatically enrolled in the Ashland Community Choice aggregation program, unless they choose to opt-out.

  • Customers may leave the program at any time without early termination fees.
  • Customers will continue to receive one bill from Eversource.
  • Customers will continue to send payment to Eversource.
  • Eversource will continue to respond to emergencies and outages.
  • Reliability and quality of service will remain the same.
  • Budget Plan/Low-Income delivery rate customers continue to receive benefits from Eversource.
