Town Manager Michael Herbert is pleased to announce that the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded their Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the Town of Ashland for their budget beginning July 1, 2018.

The award is considered the highest standard of government finance officials in the United States and Canada. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting. In order to receive the budget award, the entity had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as:

§     A Policy Document

§     A Financial Plan

§     An Operations Guide

§     A Communications Device

Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

A Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation is also presented to the individual(s) or department designated as being primarily responsible for having achieved the award. This has been presented to Brittany Iacaponi, Finance Director/Town Accountant.

“As a statement of our priorities and values, I am pleased that the GFOA recognizes our budget as one that meets the highest standards of government financial management”, stated Town Manager Herbert. “Our finance team, led by Ms. Iacaponi, continues to demonstrate that although limited in number, a talented and hardworking staff can still achieve excellence in government finance.”

This is Ashland’s second year in a row in receiving the award and is the first community in Massachusetts to receive the award for the fiscal year 2019 budget. Only 24 out of 351 Massachusetts communities received the award last year.
