    The sensational Leopold and Loeb case arose out of the 1924 murder of a 14-year-old boy, Bobby Franks. The nation's attention was riveted by this tragedy, and decades of study have been focused on how and why two sons of privilege and wealth committed this utterly heinous and completely unnecessary murder. Some say they did it "for the sheer thrill of it;" others maintain psychological factors were at work. The case is noteworthy for a number of reasons, including the fact that it was one of the first trials in American history in which psychiatric evidence was admitted.
