Virtual: A Trip To Bucharest, Romania With The Traveling Librarian

Join Jeff Klapes, the Traveling Librarian, for another of his popular armchair travel presentations. This series highlights travel photography and stories and travel tips about destinations around the world. This month, journey to Romania, one of Eastern Europe's hidden gems. While not known as one Europe's great capitals, Bucharest has a wealth of architecture from many eras, and it's not far from many of southern Romania's rural sights. We'll also visit Sinaia, a refreshing Transylvanian mountain retreat for the royal family, and Curtea de Arges, a lovely alpine town close to the castle of Vlad the Impaler. Jeff is the recently retired Head of Reference Services at the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library in Wakefield and an avid traveler and photographer.

FDR considered the creation of Social Security to be his greatest domestic achievement. Explore the creation and passage of the Social Security Insurance Act, one of the most important pieces of social legislation in American history. See job advertisements from the era; Social Security posters; photos of those responsible for the creation of Social Security (Townsend, Long & Coughlin); image of an original social security card; and letters from people at the time who had their lives saved/improved by Social Security. Led by Jeffrey Urbin, Education Specialist at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.

Join Emma Green in this exploration of the ways that Americans are divided - politically, religiously, economically, communities, and even families. Pulling from the many, many people she has spoken to over the years as well as her articles on the Federalist Society, the Supreme Court, and Affirmative Action, Emma will lead us in this difficult but essential discussion!
