"Water levels in the fall, throughout the winter and into the spring can dictate larval survival for Culiseta melanura, the species of mosquito that circulates EEE virus in the bird populations. This mosquito species spends the winter in diapause (a type of hibernation) in several larval stages, and will begin to emerge as adults in early to mid-May. Bird migration patterns from the south play an important role; as EEE is identified up the East Coast, that can give an indication for potential EEE exposures in Mass." (Central Mass. Additional information will be provided at the Board of Health meeting to be held on February 18, 2020 by the CMMCP and the slide show from this presentation will be made available on our website and other social and media outlets.
Also, we have been informed that the Massachusetts Department of Public Health will be providing a fact sheet on EEE in the next month, this fact sheet will also be shared on our website and other social and media outlets.
